Fire Prevention

The Riverside Fire Department takes fire prevention seriously! When is the last time you tested your smoke alarm, practiced your home exit drill, or just simply conducted a walk around your residence looking for fire/life safety hazards? If you can only recall changing your battery with the last time change, you are not alone. Take a moment and think about what means the most to you, and most likely your first thought would be your loved ones. Your home should be required by you to be the safest place for you and your family. The time is now to insure your fire alarms are less than 10 years old and are tested monthly, everyone knows two ways out of your house with a meeting place, and chemicals are properly stored according to the manufacturer recommendations and out of the reach of children. What prevents you the resident from calling on us first to provide guidance and direction to make your home the "safest place" for you and your family. Unfortunately, Fire Department personnel are the last ones called as we are there for life's most unexpected moments. Families today are constantly on the go and it becomes easy to overlook the simplest things that will prevent fires from occurring.

  • Keep matches out of reach of children
  • Extinguish all candles when unattended
  • Limit use of extension cords
  • Do not place extension cords under rugs
  • Do not leave the house with the dryer running
  • Keep the dryer free of lint buildup
  • Call us with help to check and /or install your smoke detector and to insure proper location of the detector

Annual Hydrant Testing

The Riverside Fire Department will be conducting hydrant checks and flushing beginning the week of April 28th and ending the week of May 19th. The fire department will be checking hydrants between the hours of 8:00am to 8:00pm. Discoloration of water may occur as a result of the flushing and residents are encouraged to let their water run until its clear. If you notice the fire department flushing hydrants in your neighborhood, you should refrain from laundry or washing dishes for a brief period. If you have any questions, please call the fire headquarters at 233-6212.

Emergency Help Guide:

How do you contact the right person? It's so easy. Go to the nearest telephone
and dial 9-1-1.

By using 9-1-1 in this area, your call will automatically be sent to the appropriate Emergency Operations Center to handle your emergency. Highly trained personnel answering these calls will get help to you if you follow these simple guidelines:

  1. Stay calm - dispatchers can't help you if they can't understand you. Take a deep breath and think before you talk. Speak slowly and clearly.
  2. State the nature of the emergency and the exact address where the help is needed. Stay on the line to answer further questions the dispatcher may have.
  3. Send someone to meet the emergency equipment if at all possible. It's hard to find an address on a dimly lit street in the middle of the night.

Remember, 9-1-1 is only for emergencies. For routine questions or non-emergency situations in Riverside, dial 937-225-HELP (4357) for police and for fire.
